The Miracle Of Earth Magnets

There was a time before video games, a time before I-pods, and I-pads, a time before DVDs, and a time before personal computers and laptops; there was a time. There was a time when children played with toys. Sometimes those toys were earthworms and sow bugs, but a lucky child, a really lucky child, would have either some mercury, or earth magnets to entertain himself with.

Now, earthworms and sow bugs were not all that much fun. About the only thing you could do with them was step on them. A child with magnets had magnetism, he had electricity, and, much more powerful than any I-phone or Play Station Three, he had real, true magic. He could make steel dance and spin, or he could make steel hop to his magnet. There was not much the possessor of magnets could not do, for he who possessed such a force also was in charge of electricity.

Oh, the electricity was easy, he would explain to his growing crowd of admiring peers. Magnetism is created by electrons, and if one would take any old iron atom...well, there is twenty-six electrons right there. Each of these electrons, he would tell his suddenly dwindling group of peers, has some negative charge. The electrons would spin all around the iron atom...but by then everybody was gone, even before the possessor of magic could show them how to turn any old bits of iron into earth magnets just by rubbing other magnets on them. Why, it was like zombies turning dumb, ordinary people into other zombies.

Time passed, as it will, and the young keeper of the magic grew tired of his toys. Tired of moving a magnetic wand under pictures of cowboys to manipulate black steel dust into mustaches and beards. Tired of throwing magnets at his mother's refrigerator. He was tired or proving, yet again, to his dad that his silver dollar collection was worthless because the coins stuck to his magnets, and as everybody knew, silver wasn't magnetic.

With a little more passage of time he began working magic in the workforce and founded a magnet company. He set up a sparkling factory, his goal to become the world-wide supplier of magnet force and power. His company grew, and soon, so did his new family.

When his son became old enough for toys, the really good toys, the founder did not buy his son earth magnets to enchant nails with--and other children as well. No, times had changed, so he bought his son the newest I-phone loaded with the latest applications. The son beamed at his father over the gift, but the father could not help himself and began to tell his son of all the magnets contained inside the phone. He went on to explain the miracle of how the electrons...but his son was busy texting, and walked toward his room, eyes on the phone, thumbs tapping buttons on his miraculous new phone. Miraculous due to the miracle of magnets.
