All permanent magnets are formed by either ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic materials. A material is considered as ferromagnetic if all of its magnetic ions make a positive contribution to the magnetization of that material. However, if some of the magnetic ions subtract from the magnetization, then the material is identified as ferrimagnetic. The refrigerator magnets previously mentioned are made of ferromagnetic materials.
Neodymium magnets are composed of a boron, iron, and neodymium alloy to form the strongest currently known type of permanent magnet. Frequently, they are called rare Earth magnets because these elements are usually found in very small quantities. These magnets are quite affordable nowadays due to a steady decrease in price since their first construction and for this reason they are often used in the production of many new technologies. Electromagnets are also commonly used. Because their magnetism is only active with the presence of electricity, they are very useful in things like generators, industrial heavy lifting machinery, loudspeakers, motors, MRI machines, and other scientific equipment so that the magnetic field can be terminated as necessary. An advantage that these magnets hold over permanent magnets is the ability to manipulate the strength of the field by controlling the amount of electricity that is fed to the device.
Magnets are used in all sorts of everyday products and activities, some more noticeable than others. Neodymium magnets are very strong, inexpensive, and easily obtained and are therefore a very popular type of magnet.
