Why Some Objects Are More
Many people know that there are industrial uses for permanent magnets, such as in cars and heavy machinery. These applications paved the way for more widespread use in commercial products. Manufacturers use magnets even for tiny items such as jewelry clasps and in children?s toys. Many a child has learned his alphabet with rainbow colored magnetized plastic letters on the fridge. There are exquisite collectible dolls from Asia that employ tiny magnets to connect different body parts and head caps. On a larger scale, big neodymium magnets were used on the Mars rover for the purpose of collecting iron rich dust from the Red Planet?s atmosphere. There are magnets in so many things that it is impossible to avoid them in daily life.
One of the more controversial uses for magnets is in therapeutic devices that holistic health practitioners claim will help ease different ailments. One can find magnotherapy bracelets at most drug stores these days. They are supposed to help people who suffer from chronic pain, injuries, or different ailments that cause fatigue and lethargy. Other than bracelets, there are many magnotherapy products on the market, such as shoe inserts, blankets, and mattresses. Unfortunately, there are no studies that back up the claims for health benefits of these products. Some people have reported that magnets provided pain relief for them, but scientists have argued that the magnetic field cannot have any effect on hemoglobin in the blood.
There are some uses for magnets that a person may not have even thought about, as well. Anyone with an aversion to needles and poking holes in his or her body can still have trendy magnetic body jewelry. The kids are safer from puncture wounds from pins, as well, when Mom uses a magnet to secure a note or name tag to the little ones shirts. Most rooms can be clutter-free with magnetic organizers to hold items in place. It is easier to find everything, and the whole space looks much cleaner.
Thoughts of permanent magnets probably do not cross most people?s minds on any given day, but they are extremely useful and often necessary in certain applications. Earthlings understand a little more about Mars because of them. Many important items are held together with magnets. Squeamish people are now able to look edgy and tough thanks to magnetic studs. It will be interesting to see what future applications will come from these amazing, attractive lumps of mineral.
