Mineral Magnetism - The Laws Of Attraction
This may sound a bit far-fetched, but the truth is that magnetism lies at the core of nearly every bit of technology we take for granted today. From the generation of electricity to the various applications of technology that utilize that electricity, magnets and magnetism are a huge part of the world we live in today. Even the memory chips in your computer and media player use magnetic particles to hold switches in on or off positions, keeping our records and entertainment firmly held in its magnetic grasp.
Neodymium magnets, the most widely used rare-earth magnets, are man-made alloys that have a very high remanence factor, as well as a high coercivity, meaning they hold a very strong magnetic charge, and are able to hold on to that charge, not being easily demagnetized. This is important in many applications where magnets are needed to perform important functions. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines are highly dependent upon highly magnetic compounds and with the cost of the machines being what they are it is important for that magnetism to remain for a great deal of time.
Electricity not only is created by moving a conductor through a magnetic field, which is how generators work, but electricity and magnetism are so closely related that every flow of electricity creates an inherent magnetic field by the simple flow of electrons through a conductor. The relationship, though obvious and more than evident is still something of a mystery. With all of our technological advances, we still need to expend large amounts of energy creating electricity. Free energy is still a long way off if it will ever be a reality, even though by all appearances the new high-powered magnets would induce instant and nearly free electricity. The motive forces necessary to move the conductors are always going to be an issue.
Neodymium magnets have such strong magnetic force that if you were to place your hand between two neo magnet discs at four inch diameter and one inch thick, your hand would be crushed horribly. These magnets are so strong that they are actually dangerous. Remember that if you are ever handling them, you should be sure to exercise caution and be very mindful. What was once a child's toy has become a very powerful tool, and powerful tools should be treated with respect.
