Touch down, lift, touch down, lift, etc. When you're almost all the way though, Stop. Flip your stone over and begin to drill from the other side. This will prevent a "blow out" or chipping the stone or glass where the hole should be. It takes practice to do this, so don't be hard on yourself. Glass and stone will pretty much drill the same. Anything else may be unpredictable, so a practice piece is necessary.

However, why not get even more bank for your buck by breathing new life into those old jewelry pieces by reversing some of their most common issues:

Problem 1: Dirty or Tarnished?

Cleaning fashion jewelry is simple but choose your cleaner wisely. Only use a jewelry cleaner that specifically states that it is safe for costume jewelry and read the ingredients to make sure that it does not contain alcohol, acids, or ammonia because these can strip the gold or silver plate. Use a children's soft bristle tooth brush for cleaning around costume jewelry stones. Its probably not be a good idea to immerse rhinestone jewelry because the stones can become unglued.

If your fashion jewelry items are only lightly tarnished a good buffing with a soft dry jewelry cloth may do the trick. For more heavily tarnished items a jewelry polish can work wonders.

Problem 2: Worn out gold or silver plating?

Because typical fashion jewelry plating is very thin it can eventually rub off from wear or become damaged from the use of harsh chemicals, creams, or perfumes. If this happens there are several options in gold and silver re-plating solutions that can be found online. Some are fairly simple and can be performed without the use of heat or electricity while others are a little more complex. I found one website in particular that offers a very good variety of plating options (e.g. immersion plating, pen plating) and general plating instructions for precious metals including gold, silver, platinum, and rhodium. For silver lovers there is one product that I have personally used that has worked well for me and it is called Silver Brite. This is an all in one cream that cleans, polishes, and re-plates worn silver on jewelry and other items. It is very easy to use and fairly inexpensive. Just rub the cream on with an applicator sponge or a Q-tip for small items and rub off with the buffing cloth that is included with the kit. The result is a clean, sparking silver finish.

Problem 3: Loose or missing stones?

If a stone such as a cubic zirconia, plastic, or glass has become loose or fallen out a drop or two of super glue will do the trick. Just be careful not to use too much. You don't want the glue oozing out of the sides and causing the piece to adhere to your skin or some other object. Most of the time a single drop will suffice unless it is a very large stone in which case you may want to use two drops. If you cannot find the missing stone there are companies online that sell loose cz stones if you have a particular chain or ring band you want to salvage. Simply do an internet search for cz stones.

Problem 4: Broken clasp?

If your fashion necklace or bracelet has a broken clasp make sure it is the actual clasp that is broken. The problem may be a broken jump ring which is a tiny metal ring that is open in one spot which connects the clasp to the chain. If this is the problem it can be easily fixed. First identify what kind of clasp it is (e.g. lobster clasp which is shaped like a lobster claw and has a tiny spring loaded lever, a magnetic clasp which is just as it sounds, or a spring ring which is also spring loaded) then visit your local craft store or do a search online for jewelry clasps and you should find what you need. If the clasp is soldered on you will need to contact a jewelry repair professional.

Problem 5: Out of date:

If you simply want to add a new flair to your old fashion jewelry pieces you can simply mix and match. If you have a special pendant that you are especially fond of give it a new life with a more contemporary chain. Add new charms to your favorite bracelet or re-plate that old silver necklace with a shiny new gold finish. Be creative!

Ever had that experience where for some weird reason, your watch just stopped working? Well you might see this in sci-fi movies where unidentified flying objects (UFO) near the area cause clocks and watches to stop. UFO's or not the reason for this is magnetism. For this reason Swiss watch companies developed Anti-magnetic watches.

Its history dates back to 1846 where experiments done to create anti-magnetic watches were first recorded. It was Vacheron Constatin, a premier watch-making company who had first done the study and experimentation. However it was only decades later until it was actualized. They were able to develop a watch that can endure magnetic fields because they used non-magnetic metals. They used the metal Palladium for their balance wheel, balance spring and lever shaft making these watches still able to function even within or after high magnetism.

Charles Edouard Guillame was the one who discovered Invar and Elinvar, nope they are not islands, but nickel based alloys that are able to withstand magnetic fields allowing a watch to remain accurate. Other alloy-based materials also include Glucydur and Nivarox which were widely used by watchmakers in the 1950's.

Aside from using alloys, another method of producing non-magnetic watches is by using a highly conductive material to house the movement inside a case.

As mentioned earlier it was Vacheron Constantin that first developed these watches; in 1915 they introduced the first anti-magnetic pocket watch. It was then followed by Tissot's non-magnetic wristwatch in 1920, and then the first anti-magnetic chronograph by Vacheron Constantin in 1954. The company Jaeger Lecoultre improved the chronograph's design and improved its resistance by doubling-up the case.

Today an international standard which is the ISO 764 dictates that this type of watch should be able to sustain itself from direct current magnetic field exposure of 4,800 Ampere per meter. It also states that it should maintain its accuracy to give or take 30 seconds/day as calculated before the test for it pass as a magnetic-resistant watch. An additional soft-iron clasp is also used to cover the movement to ensure that magnetic fields are not formed inside the watch.

This additional features has driven Swiss watch brands to produce their own watches for better time-telling performance despite other disturbing factors. Other companies that also developed their line of this type of watches include Omega, Patek Philippe and IWC.

This type of watches are best for those who are frequently exposed to high magnetic fields such as scientists, engineers and other professions that are vulnerable to it. The Milgauss model in particular produced their 6541 model for those working in strong magnetic fields in the medical, nuclear and aircraft fields. Nowadays diving watches are also required to be made like this and among other specifications.

These new discoveries sure improved the quality and utility of Swiss watches, making them all the more likable among those who want sophistication and impressive function in a watch.

As a customer or as a jewelry designer we both have the same problem with our bracelets...the perfect fit. Measuring the wrist is the only method to acquire the desired fitting. Connecting the ends with a clasp versus elastic is the next problem for either a practical or a decorative professional finish.

The customer wants to purchase a particular bracelet but it is either too small or too big. You the jewelry artist will need to make several different sizes and in different colors. Advantages include several sales may be made because more is available. The disadvantage is if you design one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces then you have tarnished your reputation.

Other materials have been invented to help solve the sizing problem. The newest on the market is stretch elastic.

I enjoy making my own clasps and extenders. Since I do bead weaving I cannot always find the necessary fasteners for my designs. Allow your talents to also design closures and other clasps. The risk of sharp metal edges cutting the stretch cord demands creativity to solve the problem. You may choose to make elastic loops which will encircle a holding bead or two and re-thread several times for reinforcement.

Why consider clasps and extenders? Often times the jewelry project will not appear professionally finished unless there is a clasp for joining the ends.
